Lavinia and Titus Relationship

As per workshops we have diuscussed the lack of obvious relationship between Lavinia and Titus. I believe this is quite a pertinent issue with regard to our composition as it stands. In our last face to face session together we decided to include further extracts and text in order to ensure this key relationship was and is not lost. Given that our composition is a piece dedicated to the physical theatre form I would like you to comment on ways in which this relationship can also be physicalised. Consider elements of a father / daughter relationship...consider your own father/daughter relationships...even if this may be father (in heaven) or absence of a father - what are your ideals of this relationship? What can you visualise as a new addition to our composition to exploit this fact? Think on music, text, visual images, or sharing your thoughts as to how this can be better conveyed to our audience...

For our piece to demonstrate fatherly love that results in murder, but only for the best of intention, there must be a change in the spacial relationships and physical contact between Lavinia and Titus. Perhaps we may include a dependancy that Lavinia has on Titus. Titus could consol Lavinia in the last scene before he murders her, as a child would feel that their parent who is the only one that understands, and the only one that can possibly help them. Just after the titus partner hunts Lavinia they can sit on the floor and Titus can pat her head, and when he decides to kill her wrap his arms around her and raise them both into a standing position. He can then commit the murder as coreographed by Tora. This will just emphisise their close relationship.

Lullabies could also establish a relationship between Titus and his daughter. When children are scared some parents will sing them lullabies to calm them down. We could filter this song through the play at times which can be discussed when we return to school. This tune could also play once the murder has been comitted, signifying that Lavinia is again released to be a child and partake in the innocence that she diserves, but only in death.

Great to see you thinking on a broad level Saintwolfe...I particularly like the idea of lullabies...spooky and haunting, but at the same time could come as a reassurance to Lavinia.... We definately need to consider the spacial relationship between Lavinia and Titus....I like the closeness of what you describe, and I think you also hit the nail on the head when you say that Lavinia has a 'dependancy' on Titus...so true...good...keep those thoughts coming!! I have been looking around for lullabies and found two (its really hard!). One is the locket music from Pirates of the Caribean, and the other is the Lullaby from Pan's Labyrinth. Both can be found in youtube is you search Pan's Labyrinth Lullaby and Calypso - Locket Theme. Pan's Lab' has two different versions. One is hummed and the other is on piano.
